How Do Hummingbirds Mate? Watch the Right Moment
Hummingbirds mate through a brief cloacal contact on a perch or other support after the male performs species-specific courtship displays. Encyclopaedia Britannica describes the sperm transfer used by most birds as a “cloacal kiss,” while a field study by Staffan Tamm, Doug P. Armstrong, and Zena J. Tooze documented a male Calliope Hummingbird mounting a perched female for two seconds. The dives, buzzes, chases, and throat flashes that came first were courtship; the two-second mount was the observed mating.
That distinction settles the central question and exposes the backyard trap. The spectacular part happens overhead. The decisive part can disappear behind one twig.
Where should you look for hummingbird courtship?
Put attention on the receiver, usually a perched female, rather than trying to follow the fastest bird through the whole sky. A courtship sequence becomes legible when one bird repeatedly returns to the same low point above or in front of another bird.
Species changes the choreography. Audubon describes the ruby throated hummingbird mating dance as wide U-shaped “pendulum” arcs, with a whir on each dive and short buzzing passes before the female. Its Anna’s Hummingbird account adds a steep dive, an explosive pop near the bottom, and possible shuttle flights. Tamm’s team documented Calliope males diving, hovering downward in stages, buzzing close to perched females, and circling with them.
Four details deserve more attention than raw speed:
- The fixed point. Does each arc bottom out near one perched bird, or does the action move away across the yard?
- The return. Does the male climb and repeat a similar path, or keep pursuing an intruder?
- The female’s response. Tamm’s team recorded a female moving among exposed low perches, chirping, and finally holding her body nearly horizontal with her wings partly open before the male mounted.
- The sound’s position. Hogan and Stoddard timed a broad-tailed tail buzz near the bottom of repeated dives; moving chatter fits a chase more readily.
The male’s gorget, the iridescent throat patch, also belongs in the sequence. Hogan and Stoddard’s model found that its apparent color changed with viewing angle. A throat that suddenly burns red may be the same bird turning toward the receiver.
What does a full courtship sequence look like?
The 1989 Condor study by University of British Columbia zoology and resource-ecology researchers Tamm, Armstrong, and Tooze contains a rare start-to-finish account. A male Calliope encountered a female on his territory at 4:23 p.m. on June 3, 1984. She shifted among low, visible perches while he displayed.
During the seven minutes before mounting, the researchers counted 19 dives, four hover-display bouts totaling 256 seconds, and six buzzing bouts totaling 51 seconds. The final buzz lasted 26 seconds. The male then mounted for two seconds in a bush about 1.6 feet (0.5 meter) above the ground. Afterward, he made 13 more dives; the female left 3.5 minutes later.
One observed sequence cannot define every hummingbird species. It does show why a dive, a tail buzz, or a brief chase cannot establish that mating occurred. The evidence lies in the order of events and, finally, the mount.
How is a courtship dive different from a territorial feeder chase?
Tamm’s field observations and Sholtis’s feeder study support a practical distinction: a courtship dive is a repeated display organized around a receiver, while a feeder chase is resource defense organized around removing an intruder. The movements overlap enough that one sharp descent deserves an “unclassified” label.

The exceptions matter. Tamm’s team found that male Calliopes usually chased male intruders, yet dives sometimes preceded those chases. The males also dived at perched flycatchers, warblers, and sparrows. Their dives toward female Calliopes contained about three times as many descents per encounter as dives toward unidentified hummingbirds, Rufous Hummingbirds, passerines, or no detected object.
A 2015 PLOS ONE study by Katherine Sholtis, Ryan Shelton, and Tyson Hedrick provides the feeder-side comparison. Using three synchronized high-speed cameras in North Carolina, the team analyzed 33 complete two-bird interactions involving Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Defenders aimed toward the intruding bird. The chased birds accelerated away, and the researchers saw none of the later stages of the typical mating sequence.
How high and fast is a hummingbird courtship dive?
The cleanest paired measurements come from broad-tailed hummingbirds, and even reputable sources give different heights. Benedict Hogan and Mary Caswell Stoddard’s 2018 Nature Communications paper says males climb about 98 feet (30 meters). Audubon’s field guide gives an upper figure of 60 feet. These figures describe the same species but come from a quantitative study and a general field account, respectively; backyard displays need not reach a single fixed ceiling.
Hogan and Stoddard analyzed 48 wild dives from 17 video recordings at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado. The males reached about 23.25 meters per second, or 52 mph. Separate audio data covered 72 dives in 18 recordings. Dives occurred in bouts of two to eight, and a descent-plus-ascent cycle took about 6.4 seconds.
Speed, sound, and color converged near the bottom. In 46 of the 48 video-tracked dives, top horizontal velocity, the tail-generated buzz, and gorget presentation fell within 300 milliseconds. The modeled female view of the gorget lasted only 123 milliseconds on average.
Anna’s Hummingbirds supply a second verified speed. In a 2009 Proceedings of the Royal Society B paper, UC Berkeley Museum of Vertebrate Zoology biologist Christopher James Clark measured an average maximum of 27.3 meters per second, about 61 mph, or 385 body lengths per second. Clark called that “the highest known length-specific velocity attained by any vertebrate.”
What happens after hummingbirds mate?
The female handles nest construction, incubation, and feeding in the familiar North American species covered by Audubon and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. That division of labor explains the search phrase “hummingbird nesting and deadbeat dads,” though the label adds a human judgment to a species-typical breeding system. A male near a feeder is not evidence that he is provisioning a nest.
For Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Audubon reports a typical clutch of two white eggs, 12–14 days of incubation, and first flight at about 20–22 days. Audubon’s range accounts show that migration sets the outer boundary for many yards, while the Smithsonian identifies nectar and insects as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird’s food. Species, latitude, and local food therefore shape where courtship is visible. A feeder can concentrate encounters without turning every encounter into a mating display.
How can you classify a dive or fight after it happened?
Use the notes, video, or memory already available. Classification improves when the event is reconstructed in order instead of reduced to “two birds flew fast.”
- Check the location. Mark whether the action began at a feeder, above an exposed perch, or beside concealed nesting cover.
- Draw the path. A rough U, repeated pendulum, steep drop, straight pursuit, and circling pair carry different information.
- Identify the participants. Record species if possible, then adult male, adult female, immature, or unknown. Unknown is useful data.
- Watch the receiver. A stationary bird that remains through repeated passes supports a display reading; a bird fleeing across the property supports a chase.
- Count repetitions and signals. Note repeated returns, gorget flashes, buzzes, pops, trills, chirps, and close hovering.
- Record the endpoint. A brief mount supports mating. Separation, expulsion from a feeder, or a lost view leaves the event as courtship, aggression, or unresolved.
A phone video can reveal the stationary receiver after the eye followed the diver. Sound may also expose repetition, especially when the bird left the frame.
How can you watch without changing the birds’ behavior?
Choose one distant viewing position, use binoculars or optical zoom, and let the birds decide the distance. The American Birding Association’s Code of Birding Ethics calls for particular caution around active nests, display sites, and feeding sites; it also advises restraint with recordings and photography.
Do not trim vegetation for a view, touch a nest, handle a bird, or use playback to pull a male closer. If a female delays returning, hovers nearby instead of approaching, repeatedly alarms, or changes route because of the observer, retreat. Record the perch, route, date, time, and weather from farther away. The unaltered sequence is better evidence.
Over a season, log first arrival, first repeated display, nest-building material, incubation posture, feeding trips, and fledglings as separate events. That record will reveal whether the yard serves as a migration stop, defended food patch, display ground, or nesting area. Some yards are several of these, just at different times.
